Ambulance driver charged in fatal accident in South Ogden

An ambulance driver involved in a fatal accident last July in South Ogden has been charged with negligent homicide in the death of 88-year-old Arline H. Logan.

Sean Reed Stephens-Applonie, 28, is charged in 2nd District Court with negligent homicide, a class A misdemeanor.

On July 7, 2012, Logan was riding in a Buick going south from a side street through a green light onto U.S. 89, police have said.

A westbound ambulance had its lights and sirens on, and a critically injured car-crash patient onboard, when it hit the Buick, South Ogden police Officer Marci Edwards said in July.

The ambulance then crashed into two stopped cars in the eastbound lanes carrying four people.

Logan was taken to Ogden Regional Medical Center, where she died.

The driver of the ambulance wasn’t hurt, but three other emergency medical responders were treated at McKay-Dee and Ogden Regional and released.

Three people in the stopped cars also were treated at McKay-Dee Hospital and released, Edwards said.

Court documents reveal no further details about the accident, but Weber County Attorney Dee Smith confirmed Thursday that Stephens-Applonie was the ambulance driver involved in the accident.

Stephens-Applonie’s attorney, Lawrence "Monte" Sleight, said Thursday that he felt the charge filed against the ambulance driver was "a little over the top," considering the man has dedicated his life to helping others.

Stephens-Applonie appeared in court Wednesday, where a scheduling hearing was set for next month, Sleight said.
