Provo police have identified a 38-year-old Salem man as the driver who died Tuesday after his dump truck flipped off a viaduct and landed upside down in Provo.

Rodney Eldon Shelley was driving a truck with a load of asphalt on University Boulevard near 800 South when the truck veered into oncoming traffic Tuesday afternoon.

The truck hit the viaduct’s railing without braking and slid for about 20 feet before it flipped and landed upside down on the road below, according to police.

No other drivers were injured in the crash. Shelley died a few hours after being taken to a hospital.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known. Police are investigating.
