A South Salt Lake man was arrested and charged with multiple felonies Wednesday alleging he sexually abused two young girls who lived in an apartment above him over a period of several months.

Richard James Hitt, 47, was arrested by Wednesday morning after a three-month investigation.

In November, police received a report that Hitt had been abusing two sisters, ages 16 and 10, between July and November. Hitt had been living in a basement apartment of a home, and had befriended the family that lived on the floor above him, according to police. Hitt had been living there since March 2009.

According to charging documents filed in 3rd District Court, the girls told investigators that Hitt would often have them over to his apartment and that starting in July, he would touch their genitals, both over and under their clothing.

The Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office formally charged Hitt with three counts of object rape, a first-degree felony; one count of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony; and two counts of forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony.

He was booked into the Salt Lake County jail and was held Wednesday in lieu of a $200,000 bond.

The South Salt Lake Police Department is asking that anyone who has more information about Hitt to contact the department at 801-840-4000.
