A 50-year-old man was killed Monday when a carport burdened by snow and ice collapsed on him.
The carport collapse occurred about 9:15 a.m. at the man’s home, 1628 E. 2050 North in Layton, according to city fire department Battalion Chief Scott Maughan. The carport was made of wood and had been added to the side of a garage, Maughan said.

Firefighters used a jack, some cinder blocks and other equipment to lift the snow-laden structure off the man’s body, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, Maughan.
The man’s name was not immediately released.
The man’s family said he and his wife had talked about creaking noises coming from the carport and were concerned about its stability, Maughan said. The man was out looking at the structure when his wife left for work just before 9 a.m., he said. It’s not clear whether the man was trying to brace the structure when it collapsed, Maughan said.
An investigation is ongoing.
