Two people were killed early Monday morning in a chain-reaction, three-vehicle crash on Interstate 80 near Saltair resort.
Utah Highway Patrol spokeswoman Mary Kaye Lucas said that an eastbound Ford Mustang with Texas plates drifted off the right side of the road, overcorrected and rolled. The vehicle came to rest in the middle of the freeway’s two eastbound lanes about 1 a.m.

The crash instantly killed the male driver, whose body remained belted inside the car. His female passenger — believed to have either not been wearing her seatbelt, or having improperly fastened it — was ejected. Seconds later, another eastbound car, a Cadillac sedan, struck the first vehicle, followed within moments by a semitrailer rig that ran over the woman’s body, which was lying on the road.
Lucas said that stretch of I-80 is remote and very dark at night and the semitrailer’s driver, swerving to avoid the wreckage, was unable to see the woman’s body until it was too late to stop.
No other injuries were reported.
The identities of the victims were being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
No citations were issued, and while the investigation was ongoing, troopers suspected fatigue may have been a factor in the initial crash.
