Shontay Nichole Young was a woman who adored children and loved spending time with her nieces and nephews. And children, in turn, returned that adoration.

On Tuesday, the 34-year-old woman's life was cut short when she was shot and killed inside a Midvale home, allegedly by 25-year-old David Fresques, who is accused of killing two others at the residence.

Young's death has left her family stunned.

"Our family is in shock," said the woman's niece, Bianca Young, on Thursday. "I'm in shock. It's kind of hard to talk about it right now. It's so fresh. We're struggling with that."

Shontay Young leaves behind a twin brother who is "absolutely crushed," Bianca Young said.

"She was very sweet, very loving," the niece said. "She was a giving person. She had some struggles she had dealt with after her mother died, but she'd always remained one of the sweetest people you'd ever meet."

She struggled with depression following her mother's death, but maintained her loving personality through it all, Young said.

"She was kind of a child care provider," the niece said. "She loved being around children. Children loved her. Absolutely loved her."

When times were tough, Shontay Young's love of music helped her cope.

"Music was a big passion for her," Bianca Young said. "It got her through a lot of her hard times."

She loved spending time with family and her many friends. But she typically kept those friends separate from her family, Bianca Young said.

The niece said family members don't know why Shontay would have been at the Midvale home, where police had recently conducted a narcotics raid.

She had no struggles with addiction, no drug arrests and was living with a cousin in West Jordan — not at the house, when she was killed, Bianca Young said.

Bianca Young said it appears her aunt was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
