A knife-wielding burglar escaped with a woman's belongings after breaking into her home in west Salt Lake City.

Police say the man — described as an American Indian, 40-50 years old, about 5 feet 6 inches tall, 160 pounds with long, braided hair and wearing a black jacket — entered the house in the 700 South block of Post Street (940 West) about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

He was confronted by the female homeowner and a struggle ensued, during which the burglar picked up a knife. The woman screamed and the intruder fled, taking with him unspecified items of property.

The woman suffered minor bruises in the struggle, police Detective Dennis McGowan said.
