Sick from contaminated food? Tell new Utah website
The Utah Department of Health has launched a new website to report food-related illnesses.
The site, igotsick.health.utah.gov, is a one-stop spot for anyone who thinks they became sick after eating and provides an alternative to reporting it to one of 12 local health departments. Those departments will be notified of the report and investigate it.
The state health department said the information provided is confidential and will be used to determine if food caused the reported illness.
Symptoms of food-borne illness include diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain and fever. According to the department's news release, food can become contaminated when it is undercooked, improperly washed or during harvesting and preparation.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate food-borne microorganisms sicken 48 million people and lead to 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths a year.
