Idaho State Police investigators say they are considering possible charges against an Idaho teenager who collided head-on with a semi-trailer rig driven by an Utah trucker.
The accident occurred about 4 a.m. Saturday on Interstate 84 near Jerome, Idaho. ISP says the 17-year-old male was driving the wrong way — eastbound on the westbound lanes — in a Chevrolet Traverse crossover SUV at the time of the crash.
Martin Steele, 51, of Salt Lake City, tried to swerve his two-trailer semi to avoid the collision, but the teen's vehicle still struck the rig's first trailer. The Traverse came to a stop on the right shoulder of the westbound lanes, while the semi halted in the left lane, in effect blocking all westbound lanes of I-84.
The interstate was blocked for four hours.
The teen was transported to the North Canyon Medical Center in Gooding, Idaho, in serious condition.
ISP declined to release the boy's name, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
Steele was not hurt.
