Unified police Sunday were looking for a man who tried unsuccessfully to use a credit card to rob a Millcreek Walmart so he robbed a Del Taco instead.

Police said the man entered the Walmart, 4697 S. 900 East, about 7 p.m. approached a clerk, said he had a gun, and demanded money.

The clerk told the man that the till couldn't be opened without first making a purchase, so the man handed the clerk a piece of candy and attempted to pay for it using a credit or debit card.

The card was rejected and the clerk told the suspect a manager would need to be called. The man fled in a an older-model dark-colored four-door sedan.

At about 8:05 p.m., a man matching the same description entered the Del Taco at 3090 S. Highland Drive, approached the counter, lifted his shirt to show he had a handgun and demanded money.

When the clerk opened the till, the man grabbed the money and fled on foot.

Police said the suspect is a dark-skinned man, who was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with a white logo on the left chest and a red zipper. He was also wearing black pants and a blue lanyard.

Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call police at 801-743-7000.
