A judge sentenced a 34-year-old convict to additional prison time Monday for an attack that hospitalized the man's cellmate and contributed to a week-long prison lock down.
Juan Ochoa, 34, was sentenced Monday to five years to life in the Utah State Prison for trying to kill his cel mate, Kenneth Flores, with a 6-inch metal shank fashioned from a piece of bunk metal.
Flores, who was stabbed multiple times, was flown to University Hospital for treatment after the April attack. He suffered a lung injury, rib fracture, shattered nose and wounds to his liver, spleen and diaphragm.
Ochoa will serve his new sentence alongside one of up to 20 years that he began serving in March 2011 for two counts of aggravated assault.
Ochoa was charged with attempted aggravated murder and possessing prohibited items in a correctional facility in the attack on Flores. A jury convicted Ochoa of both charges in December.
His sentence will begin immediately.
