A fire that started in the kitchen of an Orem apartment building Wednesday afternoon displaced four families.

The fire began around 1:15 p.m. in the kitchen of a four-plex at 190 W. 930 North, according to Orem Department of Public Safety spokesman Craig Martinez. Crews extinguished the blaze within 30 minutes, Martinez said.

The cause remained under investigation, but Martinez said there was no evidence to suggest arson.

The fire was reported by a resident of the unit, who also alerted the people in adjacent apartments. No injuries were reported, though smoke damage throughout the building meant that no one would be able to return home Wednesday, according to Martinez. He did not have information about the number of displaced people. Martinez also did not know how much damage occurred, though he said crews did have to pull down some ceilings to check for fire in the attic.

The Red Cross reported its members were helping a family of six, including four children, with food and clothing.
