Three accidents involving seven vehicles closed down all northbound lanes of Interstate 15 in Bountiful Tuesday morning.

On a cold, icy and smoggy morning, the crashes occurred within minutes of each other, according to Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson.

Three people were transported to area hospitals for treatment of minor injuries, UHP said.

Johnson said the crashes occurred in the area of 500 South and 500 West in Bountiful, the first reported at 6:46 a.m., the second a minute later, and the last of the three accidents came at 7:17 a.m.

The crashes also closed down area on- and off-ramps, forcing commuters to divert around the scene on surface streets. All but one of the lanes had been reopened by 8:30 a.m. By 10 a.m., all lanes were open.

Johnson said the accidents were blamed on drivers traveling too fast for road conditions, which included early-morning fog that had coated the lanes with ice crystals.
