D.C. deadlock dampens Utahns’ faith in 2013 • Utah’s job numbers are growing at rates commensurate with normal times. Unemployment is at a four-year low. Homebuilding is picking up again and home prices are showing a modest recovery. Lots of companies are trooping to Utah, bringing jobs that pay more than prevailing wages. In spite of the favorable signals, many everyday Utahns are doubtful because of the incessant deadlock between Congress and the White House.
Dixie State College keeping its name amid controversy • Dixie State College looks ready to become Dixie State University after the school’s board of trustees voted unanimously Friday to retain the name despite its controversial associations with the Southern Confederacy.
Utahns dare federal government to enforce gun control • On Saturday, a crowd at the Utah State Capitol was defiantly daring the federal government to try to take away any gun rights. And the Utah Sheriffs’ Association, in a letter to President Barack Obama, declared, "No federal official will be permitted to descend upon our constituents and take from them what the Bill of Rights — in particular our Amendment II — has given them."
