Sandy firefighters are calling a mobile home in Sandy a "total loss," after flames spread quickly throughout the residence Monday afternoon.
Battalion Chief Derek Maxfield of the Sandy Fire Department said a couple inside the house was able to escape unharmed, but their home was damaged beyond repair.
"It looks pretty much gutted," Maxfield said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but Maxfield said he suspected the occupants had been trying to thaw out their frozen pipes. The place of origin is still unknown, and Maxfield said he wasn't yet sure what method the occupants were using to thaw the pipes.
A dog inside the house was unaccounted for as of Monday afternoon.
The fire was reported at about 2:30 p.m. from a mobile home in the area of 8800 South and Cambridge Circle (250 West).
Firefighters had to battle the flames from the outside, cutting holes into the home to get at a fire, which had spread into a small attic area. Other mobile homes in the immediate vicinity of the fire were not damaged, Maxfield said.
