A Juab County stretch of Interstate 15 was closed for about six hours after a semi-tanker hauling gasoline rolled, and one of its trailers exploded into flames.
Utah Highway Patrol spokesman Joe Dougherty said that by 1 a.m. Monday, all lanes had been restored to normal travel at the site of the 7:30 p.m. Sunday crash between Scipio and Nephi. The crash closed travel on both north- and southbound lanes.
The accident brought hazardous materials crews and firefighters from Utah, Juab, Millard and Sanpete counties rushing to the scene. The semi’s driver was not hurt, but it took two hours alone to douse the fire and several more hours to clean up the scene.
Dougherty said no other vehicles were involved in the accident, and the main, larger tanker of gasoline did not catch fire. Rather, it was a smaller, second "pup" trailer that was fully engulfed by flames when crews arrived.
The trailers are owned by Edwards Petroleum Transport, out of Las Vegas, UHP said.
The cause of the crash remained under investigation.
