The "Honey Bun Bandits" may have struck again.
West Valley police Sgt. Jason Hauer says investigators now believe a Dec. 27 holdup of the Central Credit Union may have been perpetrated by the same people who robbed a Zions Bank branch on Dec. 17 in Salt Lake City.
The robbers in both holdups are believed to include one medium-build black male, 6-foot-2, and a small-framed white male, 5-foot-8.
The duo earned their sticky pastry monikers during the robbery of the Zions Bank at 1420 S. 300 West. The two gun-toting men left behind a package they claimed was a bomb. After the bank was cleared and a bomb squad called, it was learned the package — wrapped in Christmas paper — actually contained Mrs. Freshley’s Honey Buns.
The robbery of the West Valley City credit union, at 4090 S. 4800 West , did not involve another honey bun faux bomb, but the suspects seem to match the descriptions of the Zions Bank suspects.
Police say the two entered the credit union brandishing firearms and demanding money, then made a quick getaway in a dark-colored Jeep Cherokee. The Jeep, which had been stolen, later was found abandoned.
The FBI is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrests and conviction of the robbers.
