Whether you're reading this in print or online, you probably stumbled across it.

Even if you know there is a weekly editor's column in The Salt Lake Tribune, you may not seek it out each week. We put a lot of good stuff in the paper and on the website every day, knowing that people will come around and find it.

But we're not just waiting for you. We are also sending news out in the form of email and text alerts and newsletters. You can sign up for them at sltrib.com/pages/email.

In our Internet-immersed culture, most readers will come to us to stay abreast of Utah news. But there are a number of people who want us to find them. That can be in the form of a daily or weekly newsletter on a subject of interest, or a breaking blast to let them know a fire has broken out or a coach has quit.

It's called "pushing" the news, and much of the "push" world has moved to social networks. We generate a lively Twitter feed to give our followers a real-time news flow, and we engage thousands of readers on Facebook and Pinterest.

But there also are readers who prefer email and text alerts as a simple way to get news without friending or following anyone. Thousands of people are signed up for these, and we think thousands more could be interested. So here is a recap of the alerts and newsletters available now:

Breaking alerts

Email • We send these when bigger news breaks, like the fiscal-cliff deal.

Text • These we reserve for the biggest news or when information can save lives, like wildfire evacuations. People are more sensitive about how many texts they get and when they get them, so we keep that in mind when deciding what is worthy news for text alerts.

Email newsletters

General news • This newsletter goes out each weekday around 9 a.m. with several highlights from the morning paper and breaking news.

Political Cornflakes • This is a must-read for Utah political insiders. Prepared each weekday by our Washington correspondents, Cornflakes gives a complete rundown with links to every political story that touches Utah. You can also view it on the Cornflakes blog.

Utah Jazz • This newsletter goes out weekly during the NBA season and less frequently in the offseason. It's a great way to catch up on the Jazz for the busy fan. We also send out breaking Jazz alerts to newsletter subscribers when trades or other big moves happen.

BYU and Utah sports • Yes, these are separate mailing lists. Choose sides, or take both for opposition research.

Also, those readers who use our iPhone and iPad apps can opt in for alerts on those devices. Just follow the directions on the app.

Finally, we want to hear from you about alerts and newsletters. For Web readers, there is an online poll asking what other newsletters you might want, and how often you want to see breaking news alerts.

If you are reading this in print, you can send me an email with your thoughts on these questions.

In the meantime, sign up and we'll give you a push.
