West Valley City • After a three-hour stand-off with police, a 43-year-old man — who had fired shots at police — surrendered to negotiators and was taken into custody Thursday evening.

"He fired numerous rounds ... put a lot of lives in jeopardy," said West Valley City Police Deputy Chief Mike Powell about 5 p.m., shortly after the situation was resolved.

Powell said the man was receiving medical attention for unspecified injuries.

Police had evacuated a two or three block area surrounding a home near 3150 S. Cantwell Street (2910 West), and nearby Westlake Junior High was placed in lockdown to prevent students from walking home through the danger zone. Officers also spent much of the afternoon turning away disappointed residents as they tried to reached their homes in the evacuation area.

Powell said officers initially came to the home about noon on a report of a domestic situation.

The officers returned about 1:40 p.m. on a report of shots fired.

Later, the man fired shots at officers, but no one was hit, said Powell, adding that officers did not return fire.

The man's girlfriend, who was in the area initially, was safe, he said.

Powell said the man was facing "an array" of criminal charges.
