Union coal miners at the Deer Creek mine in Emery County will conduct an "informational picket" from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the Gallivan Center to protest what they claim are efforts by the mine owner, Rocky Mountain Power, to cut safety provisions in their collective bargaining agreement.

Rocky Mountain Power's corporate headquarters in Salt Lake City overlook the Gallivan Center, where members of United Mine Workers of America Locals 1769 and 2176 will protest against the alleged changes involving safety at the mine near the mouth of Huntington Canyon.

Rocky Mountain Power spokeswoman Maria O'Mara on Thursday issued a statement clarifying the dispute is between the union and the mine managers, Energy West Mining Co. There is not a negotiation underway between the union and Rocky Mountain Power.
