An officer in the Park City Police Department has retired in the midst of an investigation into missing money, according to Police Chief Wade Carpenter.
The chief did not identify or provide details about the officer, including gender, time of service in the department and rank at the time of retirement.
The officer retired within the past two weeks, and the retirement was not requested by department leadership, Carpenter said. He said the Summit County Attorney's Office will eventually screen the case for criminal charges. Carpenter declined to detail the amount of money that is missing.
He said most of the money in question was controlled by the local lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police, an organization involved in events like the annual Shop With a Cop, which matches underprivileged kids with police officers for a morning of gift buying. The balance was department funding.
Carpenter said Attorney General Mark Shurtleff's office is investigating the missing money from the Fraternal Order of Police. Shurtleff's office did not immediately comment on the case. An audit of money missing from the department was forwarded to Shurtleff's office, the chief said.
