Herriman's first outdoor gun range may open in the next 18 months if a location for the facility can be chosen.
The City Council this week heard a presentation where 20 site options for the range were presented. Three were picked as the best locations to satisfy residents' concerns about safety and noise.
"Those are two things I know we can have resolved and mitigate," said Gordon Haight, the city's assistant manager.
Concerns about building a gun range in the west hills of Herriman mostly have to do with concerns about noise, but others also wonder if shooting outdoors in an area prone to wildfires is a smart idea.
The three proposed sites are all on private land south of the city and west of the Mountain View Corridor. An initial proposal called for a gun range to be constructed near 4300 West and 15300 South, but residents in that area worried the location was too close to homes and schools, prompting city officials to examine alternate locations for the facility.
Haight told the council there are several aspects to discuss in regards to the future range, including a future business plan and whether the range will be private or publicly owned. The initial site proposal, near Herriman's Rosecrest development, has been donated for the range's construction — a reason Haight told council members it could be the best place for it to be built.
"The current proposed site was a land donation by the property developer, that there is incentive enough," Haight said.
The council plans to investigate alternate locations before making a choice. The next meeting on Jan. 24 will discuss the three properties more in depth.
"The City Council doesn't want to act until they have more sites and decide what size weapons will be allowed and the mitigation for sound," Haight said.
Councilman Craig Tischner said he wants a public comment period on Jan. 24 or an opportunity to hold an open house for residents to weigh in on the most recent findings related to alternate sites for the range.
