The Riverton Senior Center is the seventh Salt Lake County facility to receive LEED gold certification from the U.S. Building Council.
"Salt Lake County is committed to reducing pollution by building green and building smart," said Mayor Peter Corroon after county officials learned last week of the Green Building Council's designation for the facility at 12914 S. Redwood Road. Gold is the second highest level of certification.
"It wasn't that long ago that LEED was considered almost a frivolous expense for new construction," he added. "Today, we don't even consider new building or major renovations without designing to LEED standards."
The county's Public Works Administration Building in Midvale achieved the highest LEED standard (platinum), while gold ratings also were given to Northwest Recreation Center in Salt Lake City, Sorenson Recreation Center in Herriman and the Magna Senior Center. The Draper Library and the expanded Salt Palace Convention Center have silver LEED status.
Five more facilities await certification, Corroon said.
