Two men and a woman from Alabama remained in critical condition Friday, the day after their semi-trailer rig crashed on Highway 6 in Spanish Fork Canyon.
Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson said the 10:28 a.m. Thursday crash occurred on U.S. 6 just east of U.S. 89, near the Red Narrows area. Speed was believed to have been a factor.
The eastbound semi, hauling a load of apples, went over a concrete barrier wall and landed on nearby railroad tracks. None of the occupants were wearing seat belts; they were ejected as the semi rolled.
Laura Fannin, 26, was taken by medical helicopter from the scene in very critical condition. The driver, Jirden Mcinvale, 28, and Christopher Odom, 39, were transported by ground ambulance to local hospitals and remained in critical condition, too, though the UHP said their injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Johnson said some reports that drugs were found inside the truck and may have been a factor were incorrect. While a pipe possibly used for smoking a controlled substance was recovered from a passenger’s belongings, he said no drugs were recovered from the accident scene or wreckage.
The accident remained under investigation on Friday, Johnson said.
