The driver was gone by the time officers arrived and found the man lying in the westbound lanes in extremely critical condition, Lt. Josh Scharman said.
The man was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police will identify the bicyclist after they have notified his family.
Witnesses told police they saw a newer model white minivan taking evasive action near the accident site, but it’s not clear if the minivan was involved in the accident or tried to avoid the collision between the bike and another vehicle, Scharman said.
Anyone with information about the vehicle or the incident is asked to call the Salt Lake City Police Department at 801-799-3000.
