A 52-year-old transient remained in critical condition Wednesday, the day after he was hit by a taxi, possibly while he was sitting in the traffic lanes of a darkened downtown Salt Lake City street.

Salt Lake City police Detective Dennis McGowan said it was dark, and the man was also wearing dark clothing as he sat on the pavement at 715 S. 600 West about 8 p.m. Tuesday.

"The driver said he did not see him until it was too late," McGowan said, adding that investigators continued to look into earlier reports that the man had been sitting in the street.

The man, whose identity police did not release, suffered head and back injuries.

No citations were issued, though the accident remained under investigation.
