A man who allegedly fired a gun at an ATV rider and prompted a standoff in marshes near the Salt Lake City International Airport this summer faces several new charges related to the incident.
Brian Ray Skidmore, 50, of North Salt Lake, now faces charges of discharge of a firearm and failure to respond to an officer's signal to stop, both third-degree felonies; threatening or using a dangerous weapon in a fight or quarrel, a class A misdemeanor; and carrying a dangerous weapon under the influence, interference with an arresting officer and discharging a firearm from a vehicle, all class B misdemeanors. He had previously faced one third-degree felony charge and one class B misdemeanor charge.
Skidmore pleaded not guilty in 2nd District Court Tuesday to all charges.
On July 22, officers checking on Skidmore's welfare discovered he was in the area of John Glenn Road (6070 West) in an unincorporated part of Davis County in marshes adjacent to the Great Salt Lake.
When an airport police officer approached Skidmore, who was holding a shotgun on his lap, he drove off, authorities said. Later, authorities allege a man riding on his ATV while working in the marshlands encountered Skidmore, who fired a shot at him. The ATV rider fled and called 911.
Authorities said an hours-long standoff ensued during which Skidmore fired more shots, but authorities weren't sure if he was shooting at them in particular.
The standoff ended when Skidmore shot himself in the neck, suffering critical injuries, which he survived.
Skidmore had previously waived a preliminary hearing and is next scheduled to appear in court in January.
