A man in a wheelchair was killed after he was struck by a car Wednesday night in the Millcreek area.

The victim was identified by police as 59-year-old Raymond Nielson, a homeless man who lived in the area.

Unified Police Detective Ken Hansen said the collision occurred near the intersection of 700 East and 3065 South at about 6:30 p.m. Hansen said the car was traveling north on 700 East when it hit the Nielson while he was crossing the street a few yards north of the intersection with Barrows Avenue (3085 South). There are no crosswalks in that area, Hansen said.

The male driver kept going for a few blocks but eventually stopped after passengers in the car told him what had happened, Hansen said. Officers from the South Salt Lake Police Department, who were initially on the scene, made contact with the driver and he is now being interviewed by UPD detectives, who are heading up the investigation.

Nielson was transported to a hospital and was later pronounced dead.

No citations had been issued as of late Wednesday night. The crash is still under investigation, Hansen said.
