Sandy police suspect alcohol and excessive speed were both factors in an SUV’s fatal weekend crash into a parked backhoe.
Police Sgt. Jon Arnold said that Kevin Freeman, 49, of Sandy, had been reported to 911 as driving recklessly just prior to the crash Saturday night on 9400 South near 850 East. About 10:30 p.m., he plowed through traffic barriers in a lighted construction zone and struck the piece of heavy equipment.

No other vehicles or injuries were reported. Freeman died on impact, Arnold said.
Arnold said it would take four to six weeks for the state Medical Examiner’s Office to confirm suspicions about the influence of alcohol in the crash through tests on blood drawn from the victim.
