Firefighting units from across Carbon County responded Tuesday morning to an explosion and fire at a natural gas compressor station that injured two workers, county officials reported.
A gas line at the Dry Canyon Compressor Station, operated by the Bill Barrett Corp., based in Denver, ruptured at about 8:50 a.m.
The compressor station is located in Nine Mile Canyon, about 20 miles east of Price.
Two Bill Barrett employees who were at the facilty each suffered critical injuries due to burns, according to a posting on Carbon County's Facebook page .
A man in his early sixties was transported by an AirMed Helicopter from the scene to the University of Utah Burn Center for treatment.
The second victim, a man in his late twenties, was transported by someone in a Bill Barrett truck to the Uintah Medical Center, in Roosevelt, but they were met by an ambulance while enroute. That victim was later transported by Life Flight helicopter to the burn center.
Jim Felton, communications manager for Bill Barrett Corp., reported that as of 1 p.m., the fire was contained, but several buildings on site had been consumed.
Felton said "gas wells feeding into the facility have been shut in, all personnel have been accounted for and the location has been secured."
A cause for the explosion had not been determined.
Felton said there had been no reports of any environmental spills or releases.
