A former Utah State University assistant professor will spend four days in jail after he admitted to engaging in sexual activity with an underage teenage boy last December.
Dickey Noto Afiah Ng, 38, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of lewdness, a class B misdeamenor, in 1st District Court in August. He was originally facing a third-degree felony charge of unlawful sexual conduct with a 16- or 17-year-old.
On Monday, he was sentenced to spend four days in the Cache County Jail, six months probation and a $500 fine. The judge also ordered Ng to write a letter of apology to the victim and ruled that he could not use the Internet while on probation without supervision.
North Park Police Chief Kim Hawkes said in December that an officer was on routine patrol in Green Canyon — a Cache County canyon that leads into the mountains — on Dec. 10 when the officer spotted a vehicle parked along the roadway and stopped to check on it.
Inside the vehicle, Hawkes said, the officer found Ng, a mathematics teacher who works in USU's school of education, engaged in sexual activity with an underage boy.
Ng was placed on leave in December after the university learned of the allegations, and he resigned shortly after, said Tim Vitale, USU's director of public relations and marketing. Ng had worked for the university since 2009 as a math education professor, teaching mathematics to the school's education majors.
