Utah Transit Authority TRAX riders Sunday morning experienced brief delays after someone decided to steal copper wiring near the track.

UTA spokesman Gerry Carpenter said the thefts, which occurred at two locations after-hours, affected Red Line trains running from 4000 West to Daybreak.

Carpenter said he wasn't sure how much damage the thieves had caused. He said UTA police will study footage from surveillance cameras and work closely with metal recyclers to catch the culprit.

"It's very concerning to us because it's so unsafe to do [steal the metal] around an active railway," Carpenter said.

Normal service was restored by about 11 a.m.
