Each year, more than 1,100 Utah adults die as a result of their own smoking, according to state health officials. As part of the Great American Smokeout, observed nationwide on Thursday, the Utah Tobacco Quit Line is encouraging Utahns to give up tobacco.

Anyone who calls the Utah Tobacco Quit Line (1-800-QUIT-NOW ) between Wednesday and Nov. 25 will receive a free smoking cessation kit, with a card good for a free 6-inch sandwich at any Subway restaurant in Utah.

The call is free and confidential. Help is also available at http://www.UtahQuitNet.com.

On Wednesday, several locations across the Salt Lake Valley will offer free quit kits from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

• Magna Recreation Center (3270 South 8400 West in Magna)

• Pride Center (361 North 300 West in Salt Lake City)

• Salt Lake County Archives (4535 South 5600 West in Salt Lake City)

• The Salt Lake County Government Center, 2001 S. State Street.

The Government Center location will have Subway turkey sandwiches available on-site; the other three locations will offer a $5 Subway gift card to the first 40 people who participate.

The Great American Smokeout encourages Americans to give up tobacco for 24 hours, in the hope that they will throw out their cigarettes and other tobacco products for good.

"We're encouraging tobacco users to drive through the night before and pick up their 'quit kits' so they're prepared and ready to quit on the day of the Smokeout — or to use the day to make a firm plan to quit," said Kathy Garrett, tobacco prevention and control manager for SLVHD, in a news release. "By quitting—even for one day—tobacco users are taking an important step toward a healthier, longer life."

On Saturday, a Cold Turkey 5K run to celebrate all those who have quit smoking, who want to quit and those who plan to never start, will begin at 9 a.m. at Provo's Historic County Court House, at Center and University Ave. The Cold Turkey run is being held in conjunction with the Great American Smokeout.
