Police had to break up a fistfight between the dad of a Jordan High School football player and a Jordan High defensive coach during a playoff game at Rice Eccles Stadium on Thursday night.

Sgt. Garth Smith, from the University of Utah Department of Public Safety, said the man began talking to his son's coach during the game. The conversation eventually escalated into a heated argument, "and then there were fists flying," Smith said.

Police had to get involved after the confrontation turned physical. Smith said he wasn't sure who started the fight or whether one or both men may face criminal charges. Smith said after 7 p.m. Thursday that police still were investigating the fight and that any potential charges would be screened with prosecutors.
