A man and a woman remained in serious condition Monday, the day after they were shot while sitting inside a car behind a southeast Salt Lake City coffee shop.

Salt Lake City police Det. Shawn Josephson said doctors reported they had stabilized the vital signs of the man, 19, and woman, 18; both were expected to recover.

Officers were dispatched after the clerk of a gas station, located at 502 E. 2100 South, called 911 after the two had walked in asking for help.

Josephson said investigators determined the couple had been shot at a coffee shop about a block away about 8:30 p.m., having driven the distance to the station. Detectives as of Monday had been unable to gather much more information on the shootings, including the possible motive or suspect descriptions.

Police did say there appeared to have been a second vehicle involved, and that witnesses reported that when the victims attempted to drive away, they heard gunfire erupt.

The man reportedly was shot in the upper arm, the woman in the face.

Detectives hoped to learn more once doctors determine the victims have recovered sufficiently to be further interviewed.
