West Valley City • Police shot and killed a 21-year-old woman here Friday, and an officer was injured.

The West Valley City police identified Danielle Misha Willard as the woman who died in a shooting about 1:20 p.m. outside apartments at 2292 W. Lexington Park Drive (3710 South). Two detectives were conducting an unspecified investigation at the apartments when the shooting started.

Sgt. Amy Maurer gave few details at a 2:45 p.m. press conference, and no new information was released by the end of the night. She said the officer's injuries were not life threatening, and his condition was not released.

Maurer did not know whether gunshots were exchanged or if only the officers fired. At 3 p.m., the streets around the shooting scene were filled with police cars. Two civilian vehicles with broken glass at the site of the shooting suggested some kind of crash had occurred as well. Police did not say how the crash factored into the shooting.

Resident Reshat Delija, who lives in a house across the street from the complex, said he ran outside after hearing a crash and five gunshots. He said he saw two men in the street, dressed in street clothes, and that one man was holding the head of the other. Within two minutes, he added, "a lot of cops came fast."

Delija described the neighborhood as normally quiet and said in the 12 years he has lived there, he has never seen anything like what happened on Friday.

But another nearby resident, Deliesha Schultz, who was among the many onlookers behind the barricaded scene, offered another assessment of the block.

"I have a 16-year-old son and I always worry about him walking down this street," she said. "There's always a lot of mischief going on around here."

The nearby scene, where police were obscuring Willard's body with a sheet, made her nervous, Schultz said.

"You wonder if it's your kid behind that curtain," she said.
