The University of Utah College of Nursing hopes to offer solace to grievers during what can be a challenging time of the year with Grief and the Holidays: Bringing Light to Your Grief Journey.

The free, annual program is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. at the College of Nursing's Annette Poulson Cumming Building (10 South 2000 East) on the University of Utah campus.

Barbara Wheeler, author of When A Spouse Dies: What I Didn't Know About Helping Myself and Others Through Grief, and other health care professionals will offer suggestions for managing the holiday season and beyond.

"For many individuals, the holiday season brings celebration and joy. But for someone who has experienced the death of a family member or friend, the holidays can be a time of sadness, pain, anger, or dread," said Katherine Supiano, director of Caring Connections, in a statement.

According to Supiano, the holiday season often brings traditions and memories to the forefront, which can intensify the ebb and flow of grief.

"With Grief and the Holidays, we encourage grievers to be kind to themselves during the holidays," she said. "In this way, grieving individuals can free themselves from the belief they must feel a certain way or do certain things during the holiday season."

Folk artist Peter Breinholt will perform during the program and refreshments will be offered. Larkin Mortuary helps sponsor the event. —
