As hopes for a positive outcome diminished, the search for a missing 80-year-old Millcreek man continued Monday.

Fritz B. Helland was last heard from Friday afternoon when he spoke with a relative, indicating he was about to take his dog, a black-and-tan Miniature Doberman Pinscher (Minpin), for a walk.

Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said Helland has struggled with short-term memory loss but previously had no reported difficulty in finding his way back to his home at 3478 S. Plaza Way in Millcreek.

Search efforts over the weekend were extensive, including use of search dogs, hundreds of volunteers, Salt Lake County Search and Rescue crews, firefighters and helicopters. No trace of Helland has been found.

"We are transitioning the search," Hoyal said. "We are not asking for volunteers to respond to an organized search, rather we are asking citizens to search around their own homes, sheds, trailers, and yards for any sign of Mr. Helland."

Anyone with information about this case is urged to call UPD at 801-743-7000.
