The Box Elder County Sheriff's Office has identified Sandy resident Troy Clark Burkinshaw, 52, as the man one of their deputies shot and killed Friday evening after he tried to run the deputy over with his vehicle.

About 8 p.m., the deputy saw Burkinshaw outside his vehicle off Highway 13 urinating, said Box Elder County Sheriff Lynn Yeates. The deputy stopped to give the man a warning, but Burkinshaw gave a fake name. The deputy went back to talk to him when he took off in his Volkswagen Jetta.

The deputy pursued the man through Corinne, until he was able to stop him on a dead-end street near the city cemetery. The deputy got out of his patrol car, and Burkinshaw tried to run the deputy over, Yeates said.

That's when the deputy shot and killed him. Yeates could not say how many shots were fired.

Brigham City and Tremonton police are investigating the shooting with the assistance of a detective from the Sheriff's Office. The deputy involved has been put on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
