Utah GOP activist accused of rape walks out of jail

A Utah County man whose bail had been set at $2 million after being charged with raping five women walked out of jail Friday.

Salt Lake County jail officials confirmed that Gregory Nathan Peterson, 37, was released from the facility after posting bond Friday evening. Peterson is charged with 23 felonies and two misdemeanors for alleged crimes dating back about 14 months.

Five women — four from Salt Lake County, one from Wasatch County — have testified that Peterson, a Republican activist, sexually assaulted them.

He was arrested in July and booked into Salt Lake County jail, and a judge raised Peterson’s bail from $750,000 to $2 million. His attorneys had fought the higher bail as excessive, but 3rd District Judge Katherine Bernards-Goodman decided against them.

All Out Bail Bonds confirmed that the company had posted bond for Peterson’s release.

His next court date is set for Nov. 2.
