Police have identified a man who died under suspicious circumstances following a fight at a downtown Salt Lake City Smith’s Express gas station and convenience store.
Salt Lake City police spokeswoman Lara Jones said Thursday that investigators were still looking into the death of 62-year-old Alfred Montoya during the incident at 7 p.m. Wednesday at 873 E. South Temple. No one has been arrested.

Police still were uncertain what triggered the fight, and initial indications were that Montoya and the man with whom he fought did not know each other. Montoya, believed intoxicated at the time, reportedly started the altercation with the 53-year-old man.
Montoya, who reportedly took an elbow to the head, seemed all right when he walked away from the store and got behind the wheel of his Toyota Corolla. Then, suddenly, he collapsed and died moments later, police said.
Police are waiting for results of an autopsy.
Montoya and the second man, who police said was not intoxicated, are from Salt Lake City. No weapons were involved.
The altercation was caught on the store’s surveillance camera, Nelson said, and police were reviewing those images.
