A motorist died Monday in Washington County after he drove through a construction area and flipped down an embankment into a quarry.

The man was driving north on Interstate 15 near Toquerville about 2:15 p.m. when his Chevrolet Corvette left the road to the west, crossing into a construction area and onto a dirt median that ended in a ravine, troopers wrote in a news statement. The Corvette went off the embankment, flipped end over end in midair and struck a quarry of boulders, landing on its roof.

The driver died at the scene. Authorities would not release the man's name pending family notifications.

Investigators found evidence of methamphetamine in the debris of the crash, troopers wrote. The driver was not speeding when he crashed, troopers wrote.
