One seriously hurt in I-80 crashes near Tooele

A multi-vehicle crash seriously injured one man and left the area of State Road 36 and Interstate 80 in eastern Tooele County clogged at the height of the Wednesday morning commute.

Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Dan Altenes said preliminary investigation indicates the accidents, involving five cars, stemmed from motorists "rubber-necking" as they passed a disabled vehicle about 5:45 a.m.

UHP confirmed a 33-year-old man was flown from the scene in a medical helicopter with serious injuries after being ejected during one three crashes.

UHP said that as of 9 a.m. normal traffic flow through the area had been restored. Earlier, troopers had restricted traffic to just one lane from Saddleback Road to I-80.

No other major injuries were reported.
