A retired Ogden dentist who crashed in last month's LOTOJA Classic bike race has died from his injuries.
Douglas Gordon Cottle, 62, passed away on Saturday. He had sustained severe head injuries on Sept. 9 during the Logan, Utah, to Jackson Hole, Wyo., race. Cottle had been a regular entrant in the 206-mile, one-day race, which this year had about 1,500 cyclists participating.
Cottle was the second fatality connected to this year's event. Robert Verhaaren, 42, of Mesa, Ariz., died during the race after falling about 35 feet from a bridge in Wyoming into the Snake River.
In mid-September, Cottle reportedly had been discharged from Ogden's McKay-Dee Hospital into an assisted living facility. While there, he recently fell and hit his head; family members said the fall put him into a coma that ended with his death.
Thursday 11 a.m. funeral services were set for Cottle at the LDS Church's Rock Cliff Stake Center, 1000 Suncrest Drive in Ogden.
Cottle is survived by his wife, Betty, three sons and two daughters, according to his obituary.
