There have been an increasing number of "smash-and-grab" vehicle burglaries in the vicinity of the Utah State Capitol, the Utah Highway Patrol reported Tuesday.

A couple visiting from Switzerland recently parked their rented SUV near the Capitol and spent a short time on a tour of the building.

They returned to their vehicle to find a rear window had been smashed and belongings taken, including credit cards.

They immediately called the credit card companies, but found the cards had already been used to purchase several thousand dollars worth of items from a couple of downtown businesses.
