A Southern Utah University football player was free on bond Monday after being arrested for unpaid fines, but his future status with the Thunderbirds was up in the air.

Tyree Mills, a 21-year-old cornerback, was suspended indefinitely by football coach Ed Lamb.

"Tyree is immediately and indefinitely suspended from all association with SUU football," Lamb said Monday in a prepared statement.

Mills was arrested by campus police late Saturday night, after the Thunderbirds' 24-17 loss to Montana State in Cedar City, according to SUU spokesman Neil Gardner Gardner. He was released after posting $1,510 bail.

Gardner said Monday the arrest stemmed from earlier class B misdemeanor convictions for assault and theft by receiving.

Mills was charged with assault for shooting an air-soft pellet gun at an SUU student two years ago, according to Gardner.

Charged in November 2010, Mills pleaded guilty but failed to complete his 12-month probation when he stopped making payments on a $1,011 fine and failing to provide proof of obtaining an anger management assessment, according to court records.

In June 2011, Mills was charged with theft by receiving. Gardner said Mills removed a parking boot, which had been placed on his vehicle by SUU campus security because of unpaid parking tickets. In that case, Mills was ordered to complete 12 months probation and pay a $623 fine.

On April 23, Iron County Justice Court Judge Margaret Miller issued an arrest warrants in both cases after Mills failed to appear at an April 20 review hearing.

Mills joined the football team in spring 2010 as a walk-on out of John Muir High School in Pasadena, Calif., where he lettered in football, basketball and track. While he has played as a cornerback at SUU, in his prep years he had stints as a quarterback, receiver and defensive back.
