Two people are missing in separate incidents at Lake Powell.
National Park Service Rangers are searching for a 35-year-old Salt Lake City man who was reported missing in Gunsight Bay on Friday at 11 a.m. They're also looking for a 58-year-old Scottsdale, Ariz., man who was last seen in Padre Bay and was reported missing Monday at 7 p.m.
The Salt Lake City man jumped off a wake boat and was swimming to a houseboat when he began to call for help, according to a NPS news release. People who were with him tried to help, but were not able to find him after he went under.
Then on Monday, a storm with high wind and waves blew a houseboat offshore. The Arizona man used a jet ski to pick up a second person in another houseboat to go help passengers on the drifting one, according to the release.
As they moved toward the drifting boat, the kill-switch lanyard fell off the jet ski, shutting it down, and the man jumped into the water to retrieve it. His passenger was able to restart the jet ski and kept going toward the boat, but when people later went back to look for the man in the water, they couldn't find him.
National Park Service Rangers, the Kane County Sheriff's Office and two dive teams are still searching for them. They will keep looking as long as they have a good sense that at least recovering the bodies is possible, said park rangers spokeswoman Denise Shultz.
Neither man was wearing a life jacket. Seven people have drowned this year at Lake Powell, and none was wearing a life jacket, Schultz said.
