Man charged with car-jacking, assaulting ex

A West Valley City man was charged Wednesday with multiple felonies after he allegedly forced his ex-girlfriend to give up her car and drove her to his house to assault her.

Charges filed in 3rd District Court state that on Aug. 10, the 39-year-old found the woman in a parking lot of a Taylorsville doctor’s office, where he allegedly ran up to her as she was parking and forced her to move to the passenger’s seat. He then drove her to his West Valley City residence and pulled her from the car, charges state.

Prosecutors allege that the man then threw the woman onto his concrete driveway and dragged her inside his house. The woman ran into another room and tried to call police, but the man allegedly took the phone from her and pulled the wires out. He then fired an air gun at her and hit the wall behind her, court documents state.

The alleged assault occurred in front of the defendant’s children, ages 11 and 5. The woman was eventually able to leave and call police. A few days later, she reported to investigators that her ex-boyfriend had repeatedly called her. The defendant was convicted previously of a domestic violence-related crime in West Jordan Justice Court, according to prosecutors.

The man was charged with aggravated assault and two counts of domestic violence in the presence of a child, all third-degree felonies. He also was charged with unlawful detention, interruption of a communication device, and electronic communication harassment — all class A misdemeanors.

A warrant for the man’s arrest set his bond amount at $25,000.
