Four kids, ages 12 and 13, were arrested on suspicion of deliberately starting brush fires in a West Valley City field.
Three 13-year-old boys and one 12-year-old girl face arson charges in 3rd District Juvenile Court in connection to a one-acre fire Friday morning near 5800 West and 3600 South, said West Valley City police Sgt. Mike Powell. One of the boys also is suspected of starting a fire at the same field Aug. 31.
There was no indication the fires began accidentally, with fireworks or any other combustible, Powell said.
"They intentionally lit the grass on fire," Powell said. "They just wanted to see it burn."
Powell declined to discuss how officers concluded the group was responsible but attributed the arrests to "very attentive school resource detectives and some very observant police officers."
No structures were damaged in the fires.
Another fire broke out in the yard of a nearby home last week, but Powell said the charges against the four youths do not deal with that case.
"Nothing is eliminated, but at this point there are no charges on ... the house fire," he said.
