Firefighters Wednesday battled a residential basement blaze in west Salt Lake City that left a family of three homeless.

Salt Lake ity Fire Department spokesman Jasen Asay said the blaze started at 9:24 a.m. in a home near 1300 West and 300 South. Fire crews were able to contain the fire to the basement.

However, the blaze rendered the home uninhabitable so the Red Cross was working with the residents — a woman, her 19-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter —to find them a place to stay.

The cause remained under investigation.

No injuries were reported.

A damage estimate was not immediately available, but Asay said the home's basement sustained heavy smoke, fire and water damage.
